Poodles are thought to have originated in Germany, where they were called Pudel, meaning "splash in the water,” a reference to their work as water retrievers. The exaggerated show cut seen today began as a practical way to keep the dog’s joints and torso warm in cold water.
The Standard Poodle is a medium - to large-sized dog.The Poodle, also known as the Pudel, the Caniche (which means “duck dog”), the Chien Canne (meaning “reed dog”), the Barbone (which means “barbered”) or the canis familiaris aquatius, is one of the most famous of all Dogs breeds and is known to be proud, intelligent and elegant. “Pudel” refers to playing in water.
