Walking accessonly from either the car park on Matapouri Road (30 mins round trip), through groves of ancient Puriri trees or via Matapouri Bay (40 mins one way).
Great for swimming, snorkelling and picnics.
During March to April, you can see schools of humpback whales from here migrating through blue waters of the South Shore.
Whale Bay is a small beach with pink sands below a rocky cliff.
Its calm and shallow waters make it an ideal place for children.
The beach tends to disappear during high tides.
There are some remnants of a small fort very close to the bay, called the Whale Bay Fort and Battery.

The large grassy area behind the beach is an ideal spot to enjoy a stunning ocean sunset.
Locals frequently use West Whale Bay for shore fishing.
Off Whale Bay Road, Southampton Parish.
